"Fest" like an artist

Fest: noun – to make the most of every joy-filled festival moment
If you haven’t been to the last 48 Commonwheel Art Festivals—where have you been? (And if you have—we knew you had good taste.) Celebrate the works of potters, jewelers, painters, sculptors, photographers, glass artists, and more from around the Pikes Peak Region!

Expect to be inspired

While this juried art festival may technically have “winners and losers,” we like to think anyone who enjoys a weekend of diverse art, talented musicians and mouth-watering good food is #winning. Meet the artists behind the art and get inspired to explore your own creative expression!

Chris Reiss, 2023 Commonwheel Art Festival Artist

Fest big, win bigger

You could win big for celebrating the arts! Stop by the Information Booth to be entered to win:

  • 1 night at Keithley Pines Cabins
  • Date night at Manitou Winery
  • Performance tickets to Millibo Art Theatre
  • 90-minute soaks for 2 at SunWater Spa
  • $25 gift certificates for artwork at the Commonwheel Artists Co-op
  • Gift certificates to Goldminer’s Candy

Creativity at all ages

Stop by the Kids Zone, where they can create their own art projects, play games, learn about nature, and more. Kids (and kids at heart) can get their faces painted, play with giant soap bubbles and take home balloon animals. Discover the Kid Zone at the east end of Memorial Park.

Know before you go

"Fest" responsibly

Free shuttle

You’ll find parking at Fields Park and along Manitou Ave. Grab a free shuttle into town!

Pets at the festival

We’re a bunch of dog lovers, but “slobber” isn’t one of the mediums featured at this year’s festival.

Recycle with us

Keep this work of art known as Earth clean. You’ll find trash and recycling bins around the park.

Stay awhile in picture-perfect Manitou

Turn on your out of office message and turn up the R&R this Labor Day weekend with an overnight stay in Manitou Springs.

The 28th Annual Great Fruitcacke Toss

It's a real toss-up!

There’s nothing quite as hearty and resilient as a fruitcake—except maybe The Great Fruitcake Toss! 28 years and counting, Manitou’s quirkiest tradition started in 1996 with a couple of looney locals tossing around leftover fruitcakes in the park. After 20 years, you’d think we would just make less fruitcake. Nope, not the moral of this story. Here in Manitou, we’ve made unpopular leftovers the center of a beloved, local event!

Let the games begin

01: Distance Toss

02: Accuracy Toss

Rules:

  • 1 tosser on accuracy court at a time
  • 10 and under start from 5 feet. 11 and older start from 10 feet
  • Every tosser gets one “mulligan” (miss). Second miss and you are out
  • Start at largest hoop and move to middle, then smallest all on 10 feet. If tosser makes all 3, they advance to 20 feet. If all 20 foot hoops are made, they advance to 30 feet.

03: Balance

04: Basketcake

Catapults and cocoa

Your fruitiest questions, answered

You would think that a traditional fruitcake toss would be fairly straight-forward. But if you’re not from around here, you may be left with more questions than answers. Like, what exactly is fruitcake? And where does it all end up at the end of the day?

No fruitcake left behind

Any leftover fruitcake is delivered to SunMountain to feed their pig, Jezebel.

Gifts they'll be singing about

We all have our go-to holiday playlist. Some whistle along to the crooning of Bing Crosby’s White Christmas. While others just can’t get enough of Mariah Carey’s soulful All I Want for Christmas is You. The songs that make us jingle all the way  tell a lot about our taste. If you’re still stumped on a few final gifts this year, use our guide to pair their favorite holiday song with a local shop that’s sure to leave them rockin’ around the Christmas tree.

Their go-to holiday song:

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

What’s more traditional than Frank Sinatra’s Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas? With a class act like that, you can’t go wrong with a personalized ornament from Christmas in Manitou.
Their go-to holiday song:

Santa Baby

What a romantic! They’re a sucker for a great love ballad and would fall for a gift certificate to one of these local charms:
Their go-to holiday song:

Feliz Navidad

Spice up the festivities with the gift of a very merry margarita (or two) at some of our favorite Mexican hot spots:
Their go-to holiday song:

Merry Christmas to You

They’re not old-fashioned—they’re vintage! They may even suspect they were born in the wrong decade. Gift them a memory that’s simply timeless with a photoshoot at Old Tyme Photography.
Their go-to holiday song: "All I Want for Christmas is You"

Some of the best gifts in life are free

While we’re all for the thrill of finding that perfect gift, sometimes it’s simply the gift of time that matters most this season. If you’re ditching the wrapping paper this year in exchange for a little quality time—we’ve rounded up a few experiences that are sure to be the gifts that keep on giving.

There's so much to love!

Why do we love Manitou Springs? Let us count the ways! Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz said it best: “There’s no place like Manitou.” As we gear up for a season of giving and gathering, we’re feeling particularly grateful for our eccentric little mountain town and its motley crew of characters. We’ve made our list, checked it twice, and narrowed it down to the top 12 reasons we’re grateful to call Manitou Springs home.

#1: The magic and mystery of our healing mineral springs.

The first thing most people notice when they visit Manitou Springs? There’s definitely something in the water—lithium! And potassium, calcium, chloride, magnesium…okay—you get the idea. Ever wonder why the locals have such glowing skin? Grab a cup and taste the springs’ healing powers for yourself.

BYOC (Bring your own cup) or ask for one of our free souvenir cups at the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau.

#2. 249 days of sunshine and blue bird skies year-round.

The fastest recorded time up the Manitou Incline is 17 minutes. For the rest of us commoners, expect an hour hike straight up.

#6: The Manitou Incline, 2,744 steps to heaven.

Ever wondered what it would be like to use the StairMaster at your gym—but outside at 6,412 feet above sea level? A staple of Manitou Springs, the Manitou Incline welcomes over 70,000 masochists, er, visitors, each year to climb its nearly 3,000 steps.

#7. Homey cabins that'll make you feel like a modern-day Lewis and Clark.
#9: 18 taps of locally brewed beer at Manitou Brewing Company.

Just off of Manitou Avenue but seemingly hidden unless you know what to look for, Manitou Brewing Company is nestled into the backside of Pikes Peak. While the entrance may be subtle, their brews are anything but, with flavors like Chipotle Rye Red Ale, Peach Sour and Cherry Drip.

Manitou Brewing Company Beers

It’s “bottom’s up” at Manitou Brewing, where all of their locally brewed beer is born from the prestine snowmelt near the top of Pikes Peak.

Local rascals warming up ahead of the annual post-holiday Fruitcake Toss.

#12: The locals who call this place home.

We might just be any other mountain town if it weren’t for the community of locals that truly make Manitou Springs come alive. From afternoon drum circles to witch-owned apothecaries and everything (and we do mean everything) in between, our neighbors are the (irregular) heartbeat of our town. And for them, we are truly grateful.

As the temperatures drop and the ghost stories rise, we're debunking the tallest tales of Manitou Springs.

Debunking the ghost stories

Manitou’s tallest tales get taller as we head into the spookiest season. Founded in 1872, our eccentric mountain town has been home to some peculiar residents—alive, and dead. But which tales are legitimate and which are mere legend? We’re creepin’ it real and attempting to debunk Manitou Springs’ most ghastly of ghost stories.

the show must go on:

Former owner haunts the halls of the Iron Springs Chateau

Legend. It’s not unusual for costumes and props to go missing and then suspiciously reappear days—or even months—later. A previous owner of the building which now houses the Iron Springs Chateau just can’t seem to let it go. Since his death in 1916, JG Heistand, former owner of the Ute Iron Springs, has been seen sauntering around the theater as if he owns the place.

Unafraid of a few “boos” at the theater? Catch the Rocky Horror Picture Show playing at Iron Springs Chateau this haunting season.

she's on a roll:

The coffin of Emma Crawford raced down Red Mountain

Legit. We wouldn’t believe it—except for the children who happened upon Emma’s remains and found only the casket handles, a nameplate, and a few bones. In 1929, after years of harsh winters and spring rains, Emma’s coffin raced down the mountainside and through town.

Today, we honor her journey in a commemorative race of our own. Join the frighteningly good festivities this October!

the castle's oldest residents

Miramont Castle hosts a high tea that's to die for

Legend: Since its completion in 1895, Miramont Castle has worn many hats—home, sanatorium and, now, eclectic museum. With such a rich history, it’s no surprise that some residents simply never left. Accounts from visitors and employees suggest the castle is full of ghostly guests, including a little girl in the castle’s doll room, spirits who roam the chapel, and the priest who originally built the castle. Witnesses have frequently recounted wrinkled sheets in the priest’s former bedroom after the bed was freshly made.

This year, attend Halloween High Tea with the Pumpkin King himself.

that's a wrap:

A mummy went missing in Cave of the Winds

Legit. In 1881, George Snider purchased the Manitou Grand Caverns in hopes of turning the caves into a world-class tourist attraction. To stir up interest and curiosity in the cave, George purchased a real mummy from one of his brothers—dug up in a rock quarry just a few miles from the caves. As word spread of a real mummy in the caves, business picked up. One day, George went to move the mummy to a more optimal location for scaring, but the mummy was gone. George was the only person with access to this cave. And yet, the mummy has never been found again—as if it simply walked off all on its own.

Stay awhile, if you dare

murder at the inn:

Hauntings at The Cliff House

Legit. In 1913, a night watchman named Albert lost his life while on duty at the Cliff House. Two armed men came storming into the inn one night and demanded that he open the safe. When he refused, they shot him and he died two days later. He hasn’t left the Cliff House since. Some say they still see Albert on the anniversary of that fateful night.

Leaf Peeping is Upon Us https://manitousprings.org/leaf-peeping-is-upon-us/ Thu, 04 Aug 2022 13:00:00 +0000 https://manitousprings.org/?p=9788 With long summer days coming to an end, we've rounded up the top 4 ways to catch the leaves changing around Manitou Springs and the Pikes Peak Region.

fall in the pikes peak region

Top 4 ways to see the leaves change

Days are getting shorter and temperatures are getting lower as summer in Manitou comes to a close—and we’re not mad about it! Fall in the Pikes Peak Region is pure magic, complete with pumpkin patches, corn mazes and green chili. But you’ll have to look up to catch the biggest transformation this fall. Between mid-September and early October, Colorado is awash with golden yellows as the leaves change. With such a short window of time, make your plans now to peep the leaves here in Manitou and across the Pikes Peak Region.

Most picturesque:

Downtown Manitou Springs

Okay, so we’re biased. But there’s nothing quite like downtown Manitou Springs on a crisp, fall day. Make like a local and grab a cup of cider from a local coffee shop while you stroll down Manitou Avenue. From arts festivals to coffin races, there’s no shortage of events this fall in Manitou.
Best hiking:

Mueller State Park

Just a 35 minute drive from Manitou Springs and somehow a world away, Mueller State Park is our region’s best kept secret. Whether your idea of hiking involves crampons or flip flops—the leaf peeping in Mueller won’t disappoint. Be sure to pack a reusable water bottle and stay hydrated.
Most scenic drive:

Gold Camp Road to Cripple Creek

Fair warning: you’ll want to stop and take pictures at every pull-off along this drive. Another local favorite, this route starts just 15 minutes from downtown Manitou. Drive along winding roads and through a sea of sunshine-yellow aspens before reaching Cripple Creek. Be sure to grab lunch in town and make friends with the wild donkeys before heading back.

Timing your trip for the best colors: Locals know how to pick the prime weekend for leaf peeping. Keep track of popular spots like Cripple Creek and Mueller State Park on Instagram using hashtags. As visitors share their photos, track the leaves as they change until you spot the ultimate show of colors.

Most epic backdrop:

Pikes Peak - America's Mountain

Last but certainly not least, some of the most epic views this fall can be found on our very own Pikes Peak. Drive the highway up winding switchbacks and through golden aspen groves—or, leave the driving to The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway. The train departs out of Manitou Springs, just off of Ruxton Avenue. All aboard!

Come (visit) rain or shine

It’s true, we boast 300+ days of sunshine. And boy do we boast—we downright brag! But we still celebrate our summer rains—they keep our forests green and our rivers flowing. During the summer months, it’s not uncommon for an afternoon shower to creep over the mountains and leave as quickly as it came. Wait out a rainstorm in these top attractions that are a thunderous good time come rain or shine. #weatherjokes

boo the villain

Iron Springs Chateau and Melodrama

It never rains on their parade at the Iron Springs Chateau and Melodrama! Fridays and Saturdays through July 30th, take the whole family to enjoy dinner and a show—Montana Serenade…or…Gold Time in the Rockies. And run, do not walk, to grab a slice of their just-like-grandma-used-to-make-it fruit cobbler before the show starts.

Iron Springs Chateau 60th show

Cave of the Winds

No matter what’s happening outside, inside Cave of the Winds remains a dry 54 degree climate. At 45-60 minutes, a Discovery Tour is the perfect adventure while waiting out a summer storm. Unearth the history of the caves and explore the geology and rock formations that amazed our region’s settlers over 100 years ago.

journey through history

Manitou Springs Heritage Center

Rome wasn’t built in a day—and neither was the quirky town of Manitou Springs. Pop in this summer to take in the 150 years of history that made Manitou, well, Manitou. From the Ute Nation that settled here long before the town’s founding in 1872 to the transition from a health resort to a top tourist destination, you’ll gain a better appreciation for our little mountain town and the past that lives on today.

skeeball and pacman and pin ball, oh my

Manitou Springs Penny Arcade

Colorado’s tagline really ought to be: “If you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes.” Whether you’ve got 5 or 50 minutes to kill, the Manitou Springs Penny Arcade is a perfect spot to stay dry and play a few rounds of skeeball while the rain passes. Many of the games date back to the 1930’s, and their nickel-to-play pricing is just as nostalgic.

Packing for summer showers

Dress in layers

The weather can change at a moment's notice —so dress in layers and pack a rain jacket. You'll be glad to have options!

Wear comfy shoes

We're not exactly known for being the best-dressed state. Pack comfy, close-toed shoes and you'll be ready for anything.

Your can't-miss itinerary to Manitou

So you’re planning your first trip to Manitou Springs? If you’ve ever explored Colorado’s mountain towns, you know that each one has its own je ne sais quoi (pronounced: vibe) that makes the community unique. And Manitou Springs is no exception. Since this is, in fact, your first rodeo, we’ve rounded up the can’t-miss attractions that keep visitors coming back for more.

Drink to your good health

Tour the town's mineral springs.

Imagine a bar crawl, but more hydrating and no alcohol—with the healing powers of a day at the spa. That’s the self-guided walking tour of Manitou’s 8 mineral springs, in a nutshell. This free tour invites you to drink in the mineral-rich springs that brought pioneers from all over the country to settle in Manitou Springs.
Loose change welcome

Wax nostalgic at the Penny Arcade.

Manitou’s Penny Arcade is a staple of our quaint mountain town. Pack your pockets with loose change and try your luck at the horse races, skee-ball, air hockey and every pinball machine ever made. That last one might be an exaggeration, but then again, it might not. Trade in your tickets for a prize and capture the fun in an old-school photo booth.
a 2,000-foot stairmaster

Climb to the top of the Manitou Incline.

This must-see attraction isn’t for the faint of heart—or fitness. The staircase through the clouds climbs 2,000 vertical feet in under a mile and includes 2,744 steps (and a heart-wrenching false summit). The views from the top are worth the challenge and the Barr Trail will take you on a much more leisurely hike back into town.
The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway
all-aboard

Summit Pikes Peak on the Cog Railway.

Not to brag, but we act as a sort of basecamp to America’s Mountain. And one of the most scenic routes to the top of Pikes Peak is by way of the Broadmoor’s Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway. Travel through Pike National Forest on this 3-hour trip, including 40 minutes at the summit to take in the brand new, state of the art Visitor Center.

Think "downton abbey" vibes

Take tea at Miramont Castle.

We don’t know about you, but we kind of make a point to never miss a castle while traveling. And Miramont Castle does not disappoint, featuring 9 unique architectural styles celebrating Manitou’s Victorian heritage. Originally built in 1895 as a private residence, the castle now hosts high tea in the Queen’s Parlour Tea Room.

More time to stay and play?

There are so many hidden gems and can’t-miss attractions to be found in Manitou Springs. If you have a bit more time to explore the town and surrounding region, add these stops to your list:

Cave of the Winds

Tour Cave of the Winds and unearth tales of the region's underground.

Manitou Cliff Dwellings

Explore the architecture of ancient cliff dwellers and touch history.

Patsy's Candies

Grab a funnel cake, fresh-squeezed lemonade or a bag of Patsy's famous salt water taffy.

A town stranger than fiction

If you think Manitou is quirky—you don’t even know the half of it! From the town’s long history of healing waters to the little surprises hidden in the library’s card catalog, the unexpected is all that can be expected here in Manitou Springs.

Mountain-air vibes

Tuberculosis huts or gnome homes?

Back in the 1900s, patients suffering from tuberculosis were sent to Colorado in droves, with a prescription from their docs for fresh, mountain air, sunshine and the dry, arid climate. These red-roofed tuberculosis huts along Manitou Avenue were designed to maximize air flow and the healing powers of the high altitude. Today, the huts maximize sweet and savory flavors at Totally Nuts & Company.

Fun Facts About Manitou Springs | Manitou Springs, Colorado

We don’t know about any healing powers, but these huts’ nuts are just what the doctor ordered.

The Cliff House opened its doors to the public in 1873—making the inn older than even Colorado’s statehood.

Celebrity spottings

Famous residents of The Cliff House

The Cliff House has been welcoming the “who’s who” of guests, including: Theodore Roosevelt; Ferdinand, Crown Prince of Austria; Charles Dickens Jr.; P.T. Barnum and Thomas Edison. Guests would close out their evenings with a refreshing glass of fresh spring water from Soda Springs.

Healing mineral springs

The eight famous mineral springs around Manitou are naturally carbonated by aquifers deep underground and—well, science. Each spring has a unique taste based on its mineral composition. Stop by the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau for a cup, a map, and a guide to the mineral make-up of each spring.

A fruity concoction: Mineral water helps replace lost electrolytes—say, after hiking the Manitou Incline. Whip up a spa-like agua fresca by mixing 3 parts mineral water to 1 part fruit. Find a spot along the creek to relax and soak up some vitamin D for total zen.

Seeds are categorized by color—green, yellow, and red—indicating how difficult they are to grow.

pushing up daisies

Cataloging the seed library

The latest in George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones isn’t the only food for thought worth checking out of the Manitou Springs Public Library at the MAC. Tucked inside the drawers of a vintage card catalog is a library of vegetable seeds for the taking. Simply share the fruits of your labor for other gardeners to enjoy!

remembering emma

Coffin racing down Manitou Avenue

If you’re new to all things Manitou, you maybe haven’t heard of a little event called the Emma Crawford Coffin Races. 10,000 of Emma’s closest friends descend on Manitou Avenue in celebration of Emma’s unfortunate trip through town after her burial in 1891—dawning ghoulishly good costumes and tricked out coffins. The coffins will race again on October 29th, 2022!

5 ways to travel responsibly in Manitou Springs

We’re no stranger to bucket lists. In 2021 alone, Manitou Springs dawned USA Today’s Top 10 Best Small Town Art Scenes in America and was ranked one of the friendliest cities in the country by Expedia. It goes without saying—but we feel the love! With so many visitors to our mountain town each year, it’s more important than ever to experience Manitou like a traveler—not just a tourist. And since 87% of you want to travel more responsibly, we thought we’d help you level up your travel etiquette.

From tourist to traveler:

Take the high road—literally.

Flying leaves a Bigfoot-sized carbon footprint in its wake. If you’re visiting us from a nearby state, opt to drive—which cuts down on your trip’s fuel and environmental costs. Take advantage of our free shuttles into Downtown Manitou and public e-bikes from PikeRide—which are easy on the eyes and the environment. If you do travel by plane, book a non-stop flight into Colorado Springs for the most direct route and the fewest emissions.

Take it from the characters at Iron Springs Chateau Melodrama: when it comes to roadtripping—the more the merrier.

Find a meal that’s more Colorado than Flying W Ranch’s western Chuckwagon spread of smoked meats and all the fixin’s.

From tourist to traveler:

Eat like the locals.

There’s a time and a place for Chili’s honey chipotle chicken crispers. But why not eat like a local when you’re in town? A small purchase makes a big difference to the local community and offers the chance to sample regional flavors. Looking to spice things up? You can put our famous green chili on just about anything—including a smothered breakfast burrito at Adam’s Mountain Cafe.

From tourist to traveler:

It's electric—boogie woogie woogie.

There’s nothing quite as satisfying as casually passing a hard-working, skinsuit-clad cyclist while on an e-bike going up a hill. Ditch the driving and experience Garden of the Gods on electric bikes with E-Bike Tours and Rentals. And with parking in the garden like a game of Tetris in the summer, you’ll be glad you’re on two wheels.

The real gold isn’t in the mines—it’s on the trees. For prime leaf-peeping, book an ATV tour in late September or early October.

From tourist to traveler:

Crowds cramp your style? Travel in the off-season.

Summer vacations are so last year. Responsible travelers are opting to travel in the Fall and Winter—which supports the local economy and protects our trails and wildlife from the effects of over-tourism. And as temperatures drop, Manitou Springs transforms into a snowglobe of winter magic—straight out of the cheesiest Hallmark movie.

Leaf-peeping like you live here: The locals know exactly when—and where—to catch the leaves changing. Mueller State Park and Rampart Reservoir are just a few of our favorite spots and are relatively short, scenic drives from Manitou.

From tourist to traveler:

Follow the path well-traveled. Stay on trails.

Robert Frost really romanticized taking the road less traveled. And while it may be tempting to veer from the beaten path—our local flora and wildlife thank you for keeping to the trail. With more than 377 miles of trails, it’s not difficult to find yourself fully immersed in nature.

celebrating your BFF

This one's for the girls

In the words of Martina McBride and one of the most singable songs ever made: “this one’s for the girls.” As cupid’s arrow draws nearer and conversation hearts line the end caps of grocery stores, some of us are finding that IKEA’s instruction manuals aren’t the only thing “complicated” in our lives. Whatever your relationship status, there’s one ‘ship you never have to question: friendship.
This year in Manitou, we’re celebrating all things Galentine’s with some of our favorite on-screen friendships. Whether you and your bestie are a little more Stars Hallow or a little more Seattle Grace, we’ve put together a Galentine’s Day as quintessential as your friendship.
Galentine's Day

Lorelai and Rory

Coffee coffee coffee! If caffeine fuels your million-miles-per-minute conversations, then a cup of joe at Good Karma Coffee and a quaint stay at Holden House 1902 Bed & Breakfast may feel just like Stars Hollow. Unfortunately, a tall glass of Luke Danes is not included with your order.
Clueless

Ugh, as if! Some say the best therapy is retail therapy. If you and your best friend are in the mood to treat yourselves, then shop ’til you drop at La Henna Boheme and Piramide Clothing Company.

Rachel and Monica

As long as you and your gal pal aren’t “on a break,” a slice of New York-style pizza at Hell’s Kitchen and java at Red Dog Coffee sound so “Rachel and Monicathis Galentine’s Day. Bring a guitar to share your unsolicited rendition of Smelly Cat with the rest of the cafe.

New Year | New You

Setting the year's intentions

Can you smell that? That’s the smell of freshly-printed planners and more people than you’ve ever seen at your local gym. It’s the smell of new beginnings and well-intentioned promises. But as the light from the ball drop fades and you’ve cleaned the last, lingering confetti out from behind your couch cushions—every day after January 1st becomes harder and harder to keep those resolutions. In fact, most Americans throw in the towel by February 1st.

1
Average number of days a New Year's resolution is kept. Impressive that it was even that high.
1 %
Of Americans aren't making resolutions this year. Can't fall off the wagon if you were never on it.
1 %
Of us don't even remember what resolutions we had set by April. Out of sight—out of mind.

Intentions over resolutions

It’s been a weird couple of years, to say the least. And we know weird—this is Manitou, after all. With most of us exchanging those impossible-to-keep resolutions for more thoughtful intentions this year, we’ve rounded up our top tips for staying focused on your goals in Manitou Springs.

stone massage
If your intention is to:

Get healthy, mind and body

Self-care isn’t all face masks and mud baths. But they definitely don’t hurt! Take time to slow down with a mineral water soak, Mountain Detox Wrap or a Sacred Hot Stone Massage at SunWater Spa.
If your intention is to:

Spend more time in nature

More than losing weight or even “exercising regularly,” most of us are simply opting for a healthier lifestyle. And there’s no shortage of vitamin D and sunshine here in Manitou. Pack a picnic for Rock Ledge Ranch, take in the views atop Red Mountain or challenge a friend to the Manitou Incline.
Hiking Manitou Incline
If your intention is to:

Rekindle your creativity

We could all use a bit of creative inspiration after the last few years. Whether you’re looking to start a new hobby or rekindle your craft, the Manitou Art Center has classes to spark your imagination. If you need us, we’ll be in the pottery studio recreating that scene from Ghost
If your intention is to:

Leave it better than you found it

Saving the planet is a lofty resolution. But together, we can all do little things that make a big difference in caring for our planet. EBike Tours and Rental makes it easy to reduce your footprint and tackle Colorado’s steep terrain. And you’ve never looked in better cardio shape than on an ebike.
EBike Tours and Rental

Biking is good, no matter how you spin it: In 2020, PikeRide saved over 3,519,494 pounds of Co2 emissions - the equivalent of 76,020 trees. So let's get this straight: biking reduces Co2 emissions, burns more calories and saves you from parking in Manitou. Keeping that intention is a win-win-win!

3 tips to build your

"Stick-with-it-ness"

Make a plan

Book a class, schedule a soak or make plans to hike with a friend this weekend. Whatever your intentions, get them on the calendar.

Find a friend

Studies show (we know that’s vague, but look it up) that accountability buddies increase our likelihood of sticking with a resolution.

MAke it easy

Keep an extra pair of sneakers in your car for spontaneous hikes or store a yoga mat under your desk at work. Convenient intentions are kept intentions.

Why shop local

The gift that keeps on giving

It’s no secret that our small businesses could use a little cheer amid navigating a pandemic that has been neither merry nor bright. There are so many reasons to shop small this holiday season—from shorter lines to more thoughtful selections. And unlike the fluorescent lights and packed parking lots of big box stores, Christmastime in Manitou Springs is quaint enough to be right out of a Hallmark movie.

01: Enjoy a more meaningful shopping experience

When you walk into a shop in downtown Manitou, you know each item has been thoughtfully curated—and many items have even been hand-crafted by our local artists. Store owners and employees are delighted to answer your questions and help you find the perfect gift.

02: Find thoughtful gifts that show you care

Sometimes it really is the thought that counts. From nostalgic games at Theo’s Toys to gourmet oils and marinades at The Olive Tap, there’s something special for everyone on your list. And maybe even something nice for you, too.

03: Avoid the crowds and skip the lines

Waiting in line to checkout is just so 2019. Despite Santa’s plans being, er, deer-ailed due to the pandemic—holiday spending increased 8.3% in 2020. And 2021 spending is projected to surpass that. Shopping small in Manitou means smaller crowds and shorter lines—and that means bigger cheer!

04: Invest in and support your local community.

When you shop local, you’re directly supporting the store owners and employees—and their families. Nearly 50% of money spent at locally-owned businesses stays right here in our community (compared to just 14% at chain stores). Shopping local is the gift that keeps on giving.

Love may be blind, but we all know it’s not cheap. Let’s be honest – who hasn’t spent way too much money trying to make an outing more exciting or romantic? The good news is, you can have a great time and make some special memories without breaking the bank. Here are six fun date ideas around Manitou Springs that will leave some extra green in your wallet.

1. Incline hike

It’s not just your beloved that can take your breath away. So can the Manitou Incline, a steep climb up 2,744 steps (about 2,000 vertical feet). Reservations are required, but they’re free, and so is the shuttle from downtown Manitou Springs (but parking at the base of the Incline does come with a fee). If you want to cap off the day by catching a romantic sunset, head down early. The Incline sits in the shadow of Pikes Peak, so the sun sets earlier here than back in town.

2. Document your date

Beautiful Photo Spots in Manitou Springs

Manitou Springs is near Colorado Springs, which topped the list of safest fall travel destinations in 2020.

Is your couple status official? Share your love on Instagram or other social media platforms! Grab your phone and hiking shoes and head to the many Insta-worthy spots in and around Manitou Springs, including Barr Trail, a hike that’s recommended as your descent from the Incline steps. The hike and leaf-peeping are free, saving your money for a bite to eat (tea for two, anyone?) at the Miramont Castle Museum, where you can step back in time to the Victorian era, a favorite time period for romance movies.

What would Manitou Springs be without some spring water?

3. Soda water

Wheeler Spring
Seven Minute Spring

All that hiking is sure to make you thirsty, so it’s a good thing the region’s famed mineral springs provide free, naturally carbonated water at various fountains around town. While guided tours may not be operating due to COVID, you and your date can stroll at your leisure, sampling the waters famed for their healing qualities.

4. Garden of the Gods

Couples visiting Garden of the Gods

Few places are more magical than the nearby Garden of the Gods, a registered National Natural Landmark in Colorado Springs. The park and its visitor and nature center are free to the public and open daily. 300-foot towering sandstone rock formations set against brilliant blue skies with a glimpse of Pikes Peak in the background will provide the frame for a keepsake photo, sure to help you remember this date forever.

5. Pikes Peak

Slip off your hiking boots and drive 19 miles up this majestic Colorado 14er, to save your strength for (ahem) other romantic adventures. Pikes Peak Highway has several pull-offs where you can stretch your legs and take pictures. Dress in layers, as there can be a 30 to 40-degree difference in temperature from the mountain base to the peak. The drive isn’t free, but at $15 per person, it won’t deplete your date budget too much.

Outdoors = COVID Safer

Manitou Springs is near Colorado Springs, which topped the list of safest fall travel destinations in 2020. And since the COVID delta variant is with us this fall, it’s good to know you can still take advantage of so many safe, outdoor attractions that combine beautiful scenery with adventure (plus good food and local beer) for the perfect affordable date!

Emma Crawford, lady and legend

When a global pandemic is not our greatest fear,
Look for the return of Emma Crawford Coffin Races next year.
In the meantime, “Who was Emma Crawford?” do I hear?

She was a local of Manitou—born a year past 1862.

Atop Red Mountain she was buried,
But washed away down main street she was carried.

To honor the legend, as townies and tourists do,
We dress in costume racing coffins down the avenue.

Four mourners to a casket and one Emma in toe,
They hurdle towards the bottom—come rain, sun or snow.

But who is the lady and who is the legend,
If you’re here for a story—your ear I shall bend.

Ill since the age of seven,
Emma moved here with her mother in search of heaven.

It was said that the mineral springs were healing,
And could cure disease and an unwell feeling.

Tuberculosis or consumption,
Whatever may be your presumption,
Emma remained in Manitou,
With fresh air and cloudy days a few.

And as all tragedies too often go,
She fell in love with a man from the metro.

A New York engineer was Mr. William Hildebrand,
Employed by the cog railroad—he asked for her hand.

One day, as Emma gazed up towards the sky,
A handsome Indian beckoned from atop Red Mountain high.

She vowed to climb the mountain and meet her guide,
As for this plot—her loved ones were not on her side.

But firm in her resolve as no one could stop,
She snuck away and climbed Red Mountain to the top.

She tied her scarf to a pinon tree and left her trace,
Claiming this peak as her future resting place.

For Emma, death arrived in December 1891.
And her wish to be buried under the warmth of the sun,
Was honored by her betrothed,
Though securing a deed had been left undone.

A group of twelve pallbearers in two shifts,
Carried Emma to the top as their last, parting gift.

Buried beneath an old, wind-swept tree,
They covered the grave with loose gravel which broke free.

You see, after 40 years of rain and sleet and snow,
Emma descended into the mountain town below.

And from her voyage down the peak,
Only a bundle of bones and skull of which to speak.

In 1929, a new grave would be dug for the deceased,
So the spirit of Emma Crawford might rest in peace.

A celebrated local of our little mountain town,
Don’t be surprised if you still see her around.

And if you wish to honor the legend and these words,
Celebrate with us—the Spirit of Emma Crawford.

Legends of Manitou Springs
The first, unintentional coffin race in 1929—Emma Crawford's coffin came plunging down the mountainside after one too many spring rains.
